We get plenty of Dark-Eyed Juncos visiting during the Winter months. For a rather plain looking bird at a distance, they have subtle coloring upon closer inspection and they always seem to be willing to strike a pose or two. Over the past several weeks, I captured a number of images of the Juncos in the snow, falling snow, and ice.

Ice Cardinals
A small snow storm moved through Northern New York on the 22nd dropping about 3 inches of snow and canceling school on the last school day of the year. We took advantage of the day-off by catching an afternoon screen of the Star Wars The Last Jedi with the kids. After arriving home, I shoveled the drive way and thankfully because over night we received about 1/8" of ice.

Recently I traveled to Quebec for work. I decided to drive since the trip was only going to be three and a half hours in the car and this would be much quicker than flying. Having snowed the night before, the roads were clear, but the ground and surrounding hills were snow-covered. Driving north on the NY Northway in the early morning, rain was intermittent and the sky was overcast. As I reached the northern Adirondacks, the rain subsided and the clouds became interesting just as I was passing through the ice-covered rock-exposed hills. Having brought the Fuji X100s with me, I was able to capture some images as I traveled North. All images shown here were shot handheld in manual mode with auto ISO and autofocus.

An American Robin clings to an ice-covered branch on my ornamental crab apple tree during a early-Winter ice/snow storm. A large number of robins had found the fruit and were gorging themselves on it during the storm.
