The first weekend of Fall in the Capital District brought unseasonably warm temperatures for several days. Not good for the autumn colors, but time will tell. A benefit of the warm weather is the butterflies were active and swarming the Butterfly bushes.

A House Finch perched atop the bird feeder
While photographing the hummingbirds from the previous post, this House Finch perched atop the bird feeder. I positioned myself to frame the bird with the purple branches of the Butterfly Bush and took a few images with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens handheld.

A Ruby Throated Hummingbird approaches a Butterfly Bush to feed
The other day while taking photos, I observed two hummingbirds chasing each other around the yard. Several times one of them had stopped no more than five feet in front of me and hovered for a few seconds before continuing on its way. As if taunting me, they just hung there until I began to bring the camera up, then they flew off.

A found this Monarch butterfly on one of our butterfly bushes on a very hot sunny August afternoon. I think this was the first butterfly I have seen this summer.
